Wire Drawing

Wire Drawing: is a process of reducing the cross-section of a piece of thick-sectioned wire by passing it through a rolling mill. Wire sections are generally circular. Yet, square or hexagonal sections can be drawn as well. Circular section rods are used in the production of screws and bolts by getting drawn. Thus, they evoke a bigger section. Wires, on the other hand, are used in the production of cables and springs. They evoke a smaller section. “Wire Drawing", is a process of reducing the cross-section of a piece of thick-sectioned wire by passing through a matrix (mold).
While wire rod is the raw material of steel wires, raw materials of non-iron wires are extrusion product rods. Drawing process is divided into two as dry and wet. While grease or soap powder is used in dry drawing, liquid oil is used in the wet drawing. While wires thinner than 5 mm are produced by drawing per se, wires thicker than 5 mm are produced through hot rolling.
Flaws seen on Wires and Rods during the Drawing Process
1.The reason for the formation of sergeant mark (>>) at the center of the product is: (h/L) ratio. As this ratio increases, it loses its homogeneity of transformation. Hydrostatic tensile stress called secondary tensile stresses emerge at the center. This, then, yields to the formation of sergeant mark (>>) fractures.

2.Lack of Good Lubrication: The surfaces of cold drawn rods and wires may crack. In addition, during erroneous lubrication, scratches may be formed in the longitudinal direction on the product due to congestion of a solid particle between the material and the mold.

3.Bad surface preparation: Color deformation can be seen in cold drawn products.

4.Non-homogeneity of transformation: causes "residual stresses" to appear in cold drawn wires and rods or pipes. These stresses cause regressive corrosion fractures over time and distortion in the event of some chip removal from the surface. The only positive impact is the emergence of compression residual stress improving the fatigue life.

5.Defects in rods and wire rods that originate from raw materials: It is obvious that defections such as doubling and gaps in the raw material will affect the end product.
